Oh well yeah it's true, that I was made for you.

A couple asked me to make a set of engagement and wedding rings for each of them. They wanted something that connected the design to each other but they both had very different styles so they didn't want the rings to be identical. There was a song that meant a lot to them and they were going to have it as their first dance at the wedding so I pulled some images together to create a mood board of ideas. This was a relaxed way for me to understand what kind of visual images they were drawn to so I could create rings that appealed to them. The song is called The Story by Brandi Carlile.
"The Story"
All of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am
So many stories of where I've been
And how I got to where I am
But these stories don't mean anything
When you've got no one to tell them to
It's true... I was made for you
I climbed across the mountain tops
Swam all across the ocean blue
I crossed all the lines and I broke all the rules
But baby I broke them all for you
Because even when I was flat broke
You made me feel like a million bucks
You do and I was made for you
You see the smile that's on my mouth
It's hiding the words that don't come out
And all of my friends who think that I'm blessed
They don't know my head is a mess
No, they don't know who I really am
And they don't know what I've been through like you do
And I was made for you...
All of these lines across my face
Tell you the story of who I am
So many stories of where I've been
And how I got to where I am
But these stories don't mean anything
When you've got no one to tell them to
It's true... I was made for you
Oh yeah, well it's true... that
I was made for you...
I decided to select images of books, words, threads, bonds as that's what came to my mind reading the words to the song.
They were both drawn most strongly to this image of stacked books wrapped with thread.
I used this to create some drawings. One woman wanted her ring to feature a large morganite in the middle. The other woman wanted her ring to have stones set flush into the band. The two sets of rings look very different but when you know the story behind them, you can see the connection.
This ring is made in white gold with an octagonal cut morganite and eight round brilliant cut diamonds. The bands separate but fit togther perfectly to look like one ring.
The other ring has two princess cut blue diamonds and four princess cut white diamonds. In the wedding ring of this set, we carved out a section and inlayed a piece of gold that belonged to the bride's grandmother.
The rings have rectangular shapes like the spines of books stacked next to each other. It is so special to have something made especially for you, particuarly when it is something that you will wear everyday and that means so much.
Oh yeah, well it's true... that
I was made for you...
